Simple do’s and don’ts for timeless family photos

Do’s

Do choose a style direction

Decide if you want your photos to feel bold or neutral, dressy or casual, classic or trendy. A clear direction keeps your outfits cohesive.

Do keep colors soft and flattering

Neutrals, muted tones, and soft pastels photograph beautifully—cream, tan, sage, blush, soft blues, and muted greens.

Do choose pieces that match your vibe

Flowing dresses create romantic images, while structured outfits like blazers, button-downs, or tailored dresses give a clean, timeless look. Light-colored pants or khakis for men help keep images bright.

Do coordinate instead of matching

Pick a color palette and mix tones and textures rather than dressing everyone in the same color.

Do start with one outfit you love

Usually the person most excited about photos (often mom) sets the tone. Build the rest of the outfits around that one.

Do mix textures

Knit, linen, denim, ruffles, and cotton add beautiful dimension to photos.

Do choose comfort

If you feel good, you’ll look good—and it always shows in the photos.

Don’ts

Don’t wear neons or overly bright colors

They reflect onto skin and are difficult to edit.

Don’t choose tiny, busy patterns

Small prints can distort on camera. Larger patterns are safer.

Don’t create opposite “heaviness” in outfits

Avoid pairing very dark tones with very light tones across different people. Keep everyone in a similar depth of color.

Don’t mix dressiness levels

Keep everyone at the same level of casual or dressy to stay cohesive.

Don’t let accessories distract

Skip tennis shoes, graphic tees, big logos, sunglasses, and baseball hats.

You’re Going to Look Amazing

Choose outfits that feel like you, stay comfortable, and focus on enjoying the time with your family. Confidence and connection always photograph beautifully.
